We the undersigned officers of the Permanent Staff of the Public Works Department at present in the Colony
understand that Mr. Patrick Jones has been appointed Director
of Public Works for the Gold Coast and that it is Your Excel-
-lency's intention to apply to the Secretary of State for a
succesBor.
It is with deep mortification that we learn
of Your Excellency's decision in this matter; and we feel that
in coming to this decision Your Excellency has not given full consideration to the officers of this Department who have work-
-ed loyally for their Chiefs and loyally togather and have
fully proved both by works of considerable magnitude entrusted
to their care as well as by the maintenance of routine services
under exceptionally trying circumstances that they are efficient
and capable.
We would point out that the appointment for
the second time in seven years of an Assistant Director from
outside is a very serious matter for us; if efficient service
is not to receive the usual reward of promotion and the relative
Positions of the whole of the staff are to remain in statu quo
what hope or incentive in there for us whether old or young in
service ?
